The driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the fatal accident that claimed the lives of two of Anthony Joshua’s close friends on Monday has been discharged from hospital, given statements to the police, and could face charges of reckless driving, authorities confirmed on Wednesday, December 31, 2025.
Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, stated that the driver—whose identity has not been publicly disclosed—was treated for injuries sustained in the crash and subsequently released into police custody for further investigation.
“The driver has been discharged and has volunteered useful statements. Investigation is ongoing, and he may be charged with reckless driving if found culpable,” Odutola said.
Preliminary findings indicate the vehicle suffered a tyre burst, leading to loss of control and collision with a stationary truck along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Makun. The incident resulted in the instant deaths of Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, and personal trainer, Kevin “Lateef” Ayodele.

Joshua, who sustained minor injuries, remains under medical observation but is reported to be stable and in good spirits.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) are collaborating with the police on a thorough probe into the circumstances surrounding the crash, including vehicle condition, speed, and road factors.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway continues to draw scrutiny for its high accident rate, with calls renewed for enhanced safety measures.
