The story of Oba Kabiru Adewale Shotobi, Adegorushen V, the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, began with a closely contested traditional succession process following the death of his predecessor, Oba Salaudeen Afolabi Oyefusi, in 2014.
The Lasunwon Ruling House submitted 24 candidates for consideration, after which the Ikorodu kingmakers selected Shotobi, who was then the Odofin of Ikorodu. His emergence was challenged by members of another branch of the ruling house, leading to a court case. A Lagos High Court later upheld his selection, clearing the way for his installation. The Lagos State Executive Council formally approved his appointment on May 25, 2015, and former Governor Babatunde Fashola presented him with the staff of office the following day.

Since ascending the throne, Shotobi has combined the traditional responsibilities of a monarch with an active interest in the development of Ikorodu. He is also the paramount ruler of the Ikorodu Division and has been described as an engineer and businessman. His leadership has included involvement in community development, education, cultural preservation and efforts to strengthen cooperation among traditional rulers in the division.
His 10th coronation anniversary in 2025 provided a reflection of that role. Activities around the anniversary included scholarships for students, while government officials and other traditional rulers praised his contribution to education, cultural preservation and development. President Bola Tinubu also credited Shotobi with helping strengthen cooperation among traditional rulers in Ikorodu Division and Lagos State.

Although Shotobi is not an elected political office holder, his position places him in regular contact with politicians and government officials. His palace has become a meeting point where elected representatives and political actors engage with traditional leaders and discuss issues affecting Ikorodu.
That relationship is not entirely new. In May 2026, Ikorodu Constituency I lawmaker Gbolahan Ogunleye visited Shotobi while seeking support for his re-election bid. The monarch, however, also used the meeting to call for closer engagement with the constituency and better representation of Ikorodu’s interests.
The relationship became particularly visible as preparations for the 2027 elections intensified.

In September 2026, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, APC governorship candidate Obafemi Hamzat and other party leaders visited the Ayangburen’s palace for a meeting with traditional rulers and political stakeholders from the Ikorodu Division. At the meeting, Shotobi expressed support for Tinubu, Hamzat and other APC candidates and said traditional rulers have an important role to play during elections.
At the same time, the meeting was not only about votes. Ikorodu leaders used the occasion to raise expectations about what the division should receive in return for its political support, including infrastructure and political representation. That reflects an important part of Shotobi’s relationship with government: political engagement is also used as an avenue to put community interests before those in power.
As of September 22, 2026, therefore, the Ayangburen’s role extends beyond the traditional palace. He remains a custodian of Ikorodu’s culture and community interests while maintaining relationships with government officials and political actors. His involvement in the 2027 political conversation shows how traditional institutions continue to interact with Nigeria’s modern democratic politics while the decisions at the ballot box ultimately remain with voters.
