German mathematician Joachim Klement has once again stunned football fans by forecasting that the Netherlands will emerge as champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, extending his remarkable record of correctly predicting recent tournament winners.

Klement, whose statistical model has accurately foreseen Germany’s 2014 triumph, France’s 2018 victory, and Argentina’s 2022 success, now tips the Dutch to lift the trophy in the United States, Canada, and Mexico next year.

According to his prediction, the Netherlands will defeat Spain in the semi-finals before overcoming Portugal in the final. In the other semi-final, he expects Portugal to edge out England.

Klement, who originally developed the model in an attempt to prove that such predictions are unreliable due to the unpredictable nature of football, admitted surprise at its past accuracy.
“The first time I was horrified when Germany became world champions in Brazil, also because all the experts had pointed out that no European team had ever won a World Cup in South America,” he said.

His model incorporates variables such as GDP per capita, population size, the cultural importance of football in a country, FIFA rankings, and a randomness factor to reflect the sport’s inherent unpredictability.

Despite his track record, Klement remains cautious about how seriously his forecasts should be taken.
“It’s completely irrational. It’s like playing the lottery. I always say that if anyone places a bet based on my prediction of who will be the next world champion, they’re beyond help,” he noted. “It’s like tossing a coin. You might predict that the coin will land on heads four times in a row rather than tails, and that might well happen. But that doesn’t guarantee it will happen again next time.”

The Netherlands, one of football’s strongest nations never to have won the World Cup despite reaching three finals, will open their 2026 campaign against Japan on June 14 in Group F, alongside Sweden and Tunisia.

Ronald Koeman’s side will be among the favourites, and Klement’s prediction has already sparked widespread debate among fans and analysts.
