In a stunning upset that signals a rejection of far-right populism across Europe, the centrist-liberal Democrats 66 (D66) party led by Rob Jetten has clinched a narrow victory in the Netherlands’ parliamentary elections, according to final vote tallies released Thursday morning. The result leaves anti-Islam firebrand Geert Wilders’ Party for Freedom (PVV) tied for first but effectively sidelined, paving the way for the 38-year-old Jetten to potentially become the country’s youngest-ever prime minister.

With 99.9% of votes counted from Wednesday’s polls, D66 and PVV are deadlocked at 26 seats each in the 150-seat lower house, but D66 holds a razor-thin lead of just 15,122 votes out of over 9 million cast enough to grant it the first crack at forming a coalition government. Voter turnout reached 82%, the highest in a decade, reflecting the high stakes in a campaign dominated by immigration, housing shortages, healthcare costs, and climate action.

Jetten, a former climate minister and openly gay politician, celebrated the “historic” win D66’s best-ever result, nearly tripling its 2023 haul from 9 to 26 seats with chants of the party’s slogan “Het kan wel” (“It is possible”) echoing through The Hague. “We’ve shown not only to the Netherlands, but also to the world that it is possible to beat populist and extreme-right movements,” he told jubilant supporters, vowing to build “a government of hope and progress.”

The election, triggered by the collapse of the previous PVV-led coalition in July amid policy gridlock, saw D66 surge from underdog status. Polls had shown Wilders’ PVV leading until a late-campaign pivot, where Jetten’s optimistic messaging on resolving the housing crisis (with 400,000-unit pledges), boosting education funding, and reforming immigration resonated with moderates. PVV, which shocked Europe with 37 seats in 2023, plummeted to 26 a 29% drop blamed on governance failures during its brief stint in power and competition from newer right-wing voices.

Other key results:
Party Seats (2025) Seats (2023) Change
D66 (Centrists) 26 9 +17
PVV (Far-Right) 26 37 -11
VVD (Liberals) 24 24 0
GroenLinks-PvdA (Greens/Labour) 23 25 -2
NSC (New Social Contract) 20 20 0
CDA (Christian Democrats) 19 5 +14
SP (Socialists) 12 5 +7

All major parties VVD, GroenLinks-PvdA, NSC, CDA have ruled out partnering with PVV, isolating Wilders despite his insistence on leading talks if PVV edges ahead. “We are more combative than ever,” Wilders posted on X, but analysts predict a centrist bloc of D66, VVD, NSC, and CDA could secure a 95-seat majority.

At 38, Jetten a former athlete and D66 rising star since 2017 positioned himself as the “anti-Wilders,” blending pro-EU liberalism with pragmatic immigration curbs. His campaign’s focus on “turning the page” on division, coupled with strong debate performances (Wilders skipped one due to threats), propelled D66’s comeback. If successful, Jetten would be the Netherlands’ first openly gay PM, elevating the country’s role in EU climate and migration talks akin to ex-PM Mark Rutte.

Wilders, under constant protection since 2004, decried the outcome as a “stolen victory,” vowing legal challenges if PVV falls short. Yet, with no coalition path, his influence wanes.

The verdict, hailed as a “goodbye to the Wilders era,” bolsters centrists amid far-right gains in France, Germany, and Italy. EU leaders, including Ursula von der Leyen, congratulated Jetten on “a vote for stability.” Dutch expats in the UK and US celebrated online, with #HetKanWel trending globally.
Coalition talks could drag into December, but Jetten’s momentum suggests a swift centrist pact. For the Netherlands Europe’s fifth-largest economy the election ushers in an era of measured optimism, proving that in a polarized age, “it is possible.”
