In a remarkable display of lifelong learning and humility, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has officially enrolled as a 200-level law student at Northwest University, Kano (now Yusuf Maitama Sule University), and has begun attending lectures.
The former Central Bank Governor and respected traditional ruler was seen on campus on Monday, January 20, 2026, carrying his books and participating in classes alongside regular undergraduate students.
The Emir, who holds a BSc in Economics from Ahmadu Bello University and advanced qualifications in Islamic finance and economics, decided to pursue a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree to deepen his understanding of legal systems, governance, and justice fields he has long engaged with through his roles in banking, policy, and traditional leadership.
Sources close to the Emir confirm he applied like any other student, met all admission requirements, and was admitted on merit without any special privileges. He is said to be attending lectures regularly, taking notes, and interacting with classmates and lecturers.

Speaking briefly after his first class, the Emir reportedly told well-wishers: “Knowledge has no age limit. Learning is a continuous journey, and as a leader, I must keep equipping myself to serve better. I’m here to learn, not to be celebrated.”
The development has drawn widespread praise across Nigeria and beyond, with many describing it as an inspiring example of humility, discipline, and the value of education at any stage of life.
