Well, at the end of round one of tariff shadow boxing between the US and Mexico, something, though expected, happened just too fast —Mexico blinked. After President Trump put the pressure on with his latest round of tariffs, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum agreed to deploy 10,000 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border in exchange for a temporary pause on those tariffs. Once again, Trump proves that America First diplomacy works.

Sheinbaum made the announcement Monday morning, just hours before Trump’s tariffs were set to go into effect. The deal? Mexico sends troops to crack down on illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking, and in return, the U.S. agrees to delay the tariffs for one month while negotiations take place. It’s a simple trade—do your job, and we’ll talk business.

Trump, never one to back down from a negotiation, confirmed the agreement on Truth Social. He described his conversation with Sheinbaum as “very friendly” and laid out the details:

“I just spoke with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico. It was a very friendly conversation wherein she agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican Soldiers on the Border separating Mexico and the United States. These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl, and illegal migrants into our Country.”

Notice something? Trump is doing what Biden never could—getting Mexico to take responsibility for the crisis on the border. Under Biden, Mexico had no incentive to cooperate. But under Trump, the tariffs are real, the consequences are real, and guess what? Suddenly, Mexico is sending troops.

This also signals a major shift in U.S.-Mexico relations. Trump and Sheinbaum aren’t just talking about border security; they’re opening discussions on wider trade and security issues. Trump named Marco Rubio as the lead negotiator on behalf of the U.S., alongside Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Expect some serious America First policies to come out of those negotiations.
For now, no matter the tergiversation inclination of commentators, it is clear that Trump is winning. Again. Mexico is stepping up, tariffs are doing their job, and America is finally seeing some real action on border security. This is what leadership looks like.
