This reprieve delays the implementation of Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, which took effect on January 19.
Trump touted the possibility of a 50/50 partnership between the US and TikTok’s Chinese owner, Byte Dance, although he did not provide specific details.
ByteDance, the owners of TikTok has not commented or expressed willingness to sell or enter into a joint venture with any American entity. As to be expected in the tightly controlled government of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), the authorities, in their usual opaque business practices, pull strings to ultimately determine which way forward in the matter, which could impact their fortunes.
Trump’s attempt to ban TikTok is due to national security concerns related to potential Chinese government influence. He believes that without US endorsement, TikTok is “worth nothing,” but with approval, it’s worth “hundreds of billions of dollars maybe trillions.”
