The Federal government has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing maternal and newborn deaths, a major public health concern in the country, presently, launching a new initiative that emphasizes community engagement and participation.

The Special Adviser to the President on Health, Dr Salma Ibrahim Anas, stated this on Thursday in Abuja, saying the new initiative is aimed at tackling the issue.

While giving his commitment, he highlighted that this approach recognizes that cultural, social, and economic factors play a significant role in contributing to maternal and newborn deaths.

The government’s national strategy to reduce maternal and newborn deaths involve increasing access to healthcare services, improving the quality of care, and promoting community engagement and participation and it has been well received by stakeholders.

Some international partners, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, are supporting the government’s efforts.

The special assistant to the president disclosed that the initiative has already shown promising results, with a significant reduction in maternal and newborn deaths reported in some areas.

The government remains committed to continuing its efforts to reduce maternal and newborn deaths, with the goal of achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to maternal and newborn health.

By improving the health and wellbeing of its citizens, the government aims to create a healthier and more prosperous Nigeria.
