The Federal Government has demanded urgent action from South African authorities following the deaths of two Nigerians in separate incidents, renewing concerns over the safety of Nigerian nationals in the country.
The two victims, Bishop Taiwo Michael Fakunle and James Uchechukwu Nwankwo, reportedly died in Johannesburg and Cape Town respectively in separate incidents on September 4 and 5.

Fakunle was reportedly killed at his residence in Kensington, Johannesburg, while Nwankwo died in Somerset, Cape Town.
Reacting to the incidents, the Federal Government expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding the deaths and called on South African authorities to conduct thorough, transparent and speedy investigations. The government said those found to be responsible must face the law, stressing the need for accountability and justice for the victims and their families.
The latest incidents have also revived concerns about the broader security challenges confronting Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa, particularly amid recurring reports of xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks.

Nigeria said it had consistently engaged South Africa through diplomatic channels in an effort to address attacks against its citizens and improve their protection.
However, the government expressed concern over the failure to fully operationalise a bilateral Early Warning Mechanism intended to enable both countries to identify and respond to emerging threats against their nationals. While Nigeria has signed the agreement, South Africa is yet to complete the process, according to the government.
The Federal Government said it was considering additional measures to secure stronger cooperation from South African authorities and ensure greater protection for Nigerians living in the country.

The latest deaths are likely to intensify calls for both countries to move beyond diplomatic assurances and take concrete steps to prevent further attacks and deaths.
For the families of Fakunle and Nwankwo, however, the immediate demand remains justice and clarity over the circumstances that led to the deaths of their loved ones.
