Manchester United have sacked Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim, the club confirmed on Monday, January 5, 2026, ending his turbulent 14-month spell at Old Trafford.
Amorim’s final match was Sunday’s frustrating 1-1 draw against Leeds United, leaving the Red Devils in sixth place in the Premier League far below expectations for a club of United’s stature.
The 40-year-old, who arrived from Sporting CP in November 2024 with high hopes, recorded the lowest win percentage (38%) of any permanent manager in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, winning just 24 of his 63 competitive matches.
In a club statement, United said: “Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United. Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May. The club thanks Ruben for his efforts and wishes him well for the future.”
Amorim had hinted at underlying tensions with the hierarchy in his post-match comments on Sunday, insisting he was brought in as “manager” rather than “head coach” and vowing not to quit: “It’s going to be like this for 18 months or when the board decide to change… I’m not going to quit. I will do my job until another guy comes here to replace me.”

Darren Fletcher, current Under-18s coach and former United midfielder, is expected to take interim charge until the end of the season. The team’s next fixture is a Premier League clash against Burnley on Wednesday night.
