The Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has publicly expressed gratitude to Governor Monday Okpebholo for his swift response to the recent attack on journalists during the Governorship Tribunal case in Benin City.

In a joint statement issued by the NUJ Chairman, Dr. Festus Alenkhe, and Secretary, Andy Egbon, the union commended the Governor’s decisive actions in addressing the situation. They highlighted that his intervention underscores a strong commitment to safeguarding the rights and security of media practitioners.

The incident involved an assault by some uniformed personnel on journalists covering the tribunal proceedings, prompting immediate action by Governor Okpebholo. He directed relevant security agencies to thoroughly investigate the claims raised by the NUJ.

The NUJ applauded the Governor’s proactive stance, describing it as a reinforcement of democratic principles and the rule of law. The union reiterated its dedication to advocating for journalists’ rights and fostering a safe environment for the media to operate effectively.

The NUJ statement read; “We are deeply grateful to Governor Okpebholo for his prompt intervention, which has sent a strong message that attacks on journalists will not be tolerated in Edo State.”

The Union, while pledging its support for the administration’s efforts to promote a safe and enabling environment for media practice in the state, urged all stakeholders to put their shoulders to the wheel in support of the Governor’s development efforts.
