The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sharply criticised the Presidency for allegedly placing revenue generation above the welfare and survival of Nigerians, particularly in the implementation of the new tax reform laws set to take full effect on January 1, 2026.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the opposition party described the Federal Government’s insistence on proceeding with the reforms—despite widespread concerns as “insensitive and anti-people.”
“The PDP strongly condemns the statement by the Presidency that the new tax laws will commence as scheduled on January 1, 2026, without regard to the wellbeing, welfare, and survival of Nigerians,” Ologunagba said.
The party argued that the reforms, including the Nigeria Tax Act and related bills, impose additional burdens on citizens already grappling with economic hardship, high inflation, unemployment, and poverty exacerbated by previous policies like fuel subsidy removal.
PDP highlighted perceived discrepancies in the published versions of the laws, echoing earlier concerns raised by lawmakers, and accused the administration of rushing implementation to boost revenue at the expense of public interest.

“This obsessive pursuit of revenue at the detriment of the welfare of citizens further confirms that this APC administration is not interested in the wellbeing of Nigerians,” the statement read.
The opposition called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately suspend the laws, engage stakeholders for review, and prioritise policies that alleviate suffering.
The Presidency has yet to respond to the latest PDP salvo, but earlier maintained that the reforms are progressive, aimed at fairness, and include exemptions for low-income earners.
The controversy has intensified public debate as the new year approaches, with civil society groups and labour unions also voicing reservations.
