In a historic glass ceiling shattering political moment, 72 years old Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah was elected Namibia’s first female president after a controversial national election. She won the election with 57% of votes, despite the opposition vowing not to recognize the results due to logistical and technical issues.

Nandi-Ndaitwah is not a greenhorn in politics. Before being elected president of the three million peopled nation, she had served as Namibia’s vice president and has been a long-time member of the ruling SWAPO Party. She has held various ministerial positions, including Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Minister of Environment and Tourism, and Minister of Information and Broadcasting.

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa, praised her leadership and look forward to deepening the relationship between Namibia and South Africa.
“On behalf of the government and people of South Africa, I offer my warm congratulations to President-Elect Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of our sister country and neighbour, the Republic of Namibia.
“Congratulations to you personally, my sister, and to the South West Africa People’s Organization which has benefited greatly from your leadership as Vice-President of the organization.
“I look forward to us deepening our relationship with Namibia and ensuring that the people of our two nations will come to greater understanding and appreciation of our shared history and our shared future,” Ramaphosa said in a statement shared on X.

Namibia became independent on March 21, 1990, after about 106 years under German and South African rule, choosing English as its official language. Under a democratic system of government, it practices a multiparty constitution. The capital of the country is Windhoek.

In her brief speech accepting the mandate, she emphasized the importance of peace and stability, saying, “The Namibian nation has voted for peace and stability”.
