President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has firmly reaffirmed Governor Siminalayi Fubara as the recognised leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, effectively throwing the weight of the Presidency behind the governor amid escalating impeachment moves and open political warfare with his predecessor, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike.

The President’s position was made clear during a closed-door meeting with key Rivers stakeholders at the Presidential Villa on Thursday, January 23, 2026. Multiple sources familiar with the discussions confirmed that Tinubu explicitly directed party leaders and loyalists in the state to accord full recognition to Governor Fubara as the APC leader in Rivers.

“President Tinubu made it very clear: Governor Fubara is the duly elected governor and the leader of the APC in Rivers State. There is only one recognised leadership structure, and any contrary claim is not acceptable,” a source close to the meeting told DDNewsOnline.

The reaffirmation comes at a critical moment: Pro-Wike lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly (led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule) have threatened to serve impeachment notice on Governor Fubara within days, accusing him of gross misconduct and breach of trust.

A Rivers High Court recently granted an ex-parte order restraining the Chief Judge from receiving or acting on any impeachment notice, creating a legal stalemate.

The state APC has been factionalised since 2023, with the Wike camp claiming control of party structures while Fubara’s loyalists insist he is the authentic leader.

Tinubu’s intervention is widely seen as an attempt to de-escalate the crisis and prevent a total breakdown of governance in the oil-rich state, which remains strategically important for the ruling party ahead of 2027.

Political observers note that the President’s backing of Fubara represents a significant shift, given Wike’s historical alliance with Tinubu and his role in delivering Rivers to the APC in 2023 despite not being a member at the time.

Wike, who has been openly critical of Fubara and accused him of ingratitude, has yet to publicly respond to the President’s latest position.

The Rivers crisis remains one of the most volatile political flashpoints in Nigeria, with implications for national APC unity and stability in the South-South geopolitical zone.
