President Donald Trump reportedly told Norway’s Prime Minister that one of his motivations for pushing to acquire Greenland is that he has never won the Nobel Peace Prize, according to a text message he sent to the Norwegian leader over the weekend.
The extraordinary revelation emerged from diplomatic sources familiar with the private exchange between Trump and Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre on Saturday, January 18, 2026.
In the message described as “blunt and characteristically Trumpian” the U.S. president allegedly wrote:
“I’m serious about Greenland. It’s strategic, it’s beautiful, and frankly, I deserve it. They gave Obama the Nobel Peace Prize for doing nothing. I did more for peace than anyone, and I got nothing. Greenland would be a great prize.”
The text was sent amid renewed discussions between the U.S. and Denmark/Norway about Arctic security, resource rights, and strategic basing in Greenland—an autonomous territory of Denmark that Trump famously sought to purchase during his first term.
Norwegian officials have not publicly confirmed the message but have privately described it as “consistent with Trump’s style of negotiation,” blending geopolitical strategy with personal grievance.

The claim has sparked immediate ridicule and disbelief on social media, with critics calling it “the most Trump thing ever” and supporters framing it as evidence of his unfiltered candor.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt declined to comment on private diplomatic communications but reiterated Trump’s long-standing view that Greenland is vital to U.S. national security due to its strategic location, mineral resources, and role in countering Chinese and Russian influence in the Arctic.
Denmark has repeatedly stated that Greenland is not for sale, while Greenlandic leaders have emphasized self-determination.
The reported text message revives memories of Trump’s 2019 bid to buy Greenland, which was dismissed as absurd by Danish officials at the time but has since been reframed by the administration as a serious national security priority.
