Violent protests broke out across several Swiss cities on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, as anti-Trump demonstrators burned American flags, smashed windows, and clashed with riot police in the lead-up to President Donald Trump’s highly anticipated arrival in Davos for the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting.
The demonstrations, which began peacefully in the morning, escalated into running battles in Zurich, Geneva, Basel, and Bern, with protesters chanting slogans such as “Trump not welcome,” “No to fascism,” and “America out of Davos.” At least three U.S. flags were set ablaze in Zurich’s central square, while in Geneva, demonstrators attempted to march toward the U.S. mission before being repelled by tear gas and water cannons.
Riot police, equipped with shields, batons, and rubber bullets, responded with force to disperse crowds after reports of thrown projectiles, barricades, and vandalism of banks and luxury shops associated with “global elites.” Swiss authorities reported 47 arrests, 19 injuries (including 8 police officers), and widespread property damage estimated in the millions of Swiss francs.
The protests are the largest seen in Switzerland ahead of a WEF summit since the 2001 anti-globalisation demonstrations. Organisers, including climate activists, anti-capitalist groups, and migrant solidarity networks, had called for mass action against what they described as “Trump’s return to power and his agenda of isolationism, fossil fuels, and billionaire privilege.”

President Trump is scheduled to arrive in Switzerland on Thursday, January 22, 2026, to deliver a keynote address at the WEF, where he is expected to defend his “America First” policies, promote U.S. energy independence, and push for bilateral trade deals. His participation has already drawn sharp criticism from European leaders and climate advocates.
Swiss Federal Police and Davos local authorities have declared the WEF zone a restricted area, deployed thousands of officers, and activated drone surveillance and water barriers. Authorities warned that any attempt to disrupt the forum would face “severe consequences.”
The protests are ongoing into the evening, with organisers vowing to continue demonstrations throughout the five-day summit.
