The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has raised fresh concerns over the preparedness of Nigeria’s electoral system ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that unresolved leadership crises within political parties if not addressed in line with court rulings could disrupt the election timetable. In a statement issued in Lagos, the NNPP National Secretary, Mr. Ogini Olaposi, accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of failing to comply with valid court orders, a situation he said could trigger widespread litigation and ultimately affect the scheduling of the elections.
Olaposi cited a recent judgment by the Federal Capital Territory High Court, which directed INEC to recognise the Agbo Major-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the NNPP and update its records within 72 hours. According to him, the commission has yet to comply weeks after the ruling, despite proof of service.
“INEC’s disobedience to court orders is avoidable. It is disturbing that an institution led by legal luminaries would disregard judicial pronouncements,” he stated.

He warned that the party may initiate contempt proceedings and pursue the matter up to the Supreme Court if compliance is not secured within seven days, stressing that such legal battles could consume valuable time needed for election preparations.
The NNPP’s concerns mirror a broader pattern across Nigeria’s political landscape, where internal leadership disputes and factional battles have increasingly spilled into the courts. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for instance, has been grappling with lingering internal divisions over its national leadership and zoning arrangements, leading to multiple legal challenges and factional alignments in recent months.

Similarly, the Labour Party (LP) has faced protracted leadership tussles between rival factions, a crisis that has already affected its organisational cohesion and prompted defections by key lawmakers citing uncertainty within the party structure. Even within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), there have been pockets of internal disagreements at state levels, though largely managed through party mechanisms rather than prolonged litigation.
Emerging parties like the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have also been drawn into coalition negotiations that could spark future disputes over leadership, structure, and candidate selection as 2027 approaches.
Analysts warn that if INEC fails to decisively resolve or respond to court-backed leadership disputes, Nigeria could face a scenario where: Multiple factions of the same party present candidates, Court injunctions stall party primaries and Election timetables require adjustments due to prolonged litigation. Such developments have historical precedent in Nigeria’s electoral cycle, where pre-election litigations have occasionally altered political timelines and candidate lists.

Olaposi argued that INEC must ensure all political parties are given equal footing to prepare for the elections, warning that selective recognition or delayed compliance could undermine credibility. The NNPP has called on key institutions, including the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Nigerian Bar Association, to intervene and ensure that the rule of law is upheld.
The party also urged the judiciary to protect its authority by enforcing compliance with court orders, warning that failure to do so could erode public confidence in both the electoral system and democratic governance.
“INEC’s present conduct may constitute a threat to democracy… the commission must retrace its steps,” Olaposi said.

He further called for a comprehensive overhaul of INEC’s legal department to restore credibility and align its operations with constitutional provisions and judicial directives. With less than two years to the 2027 general elections, Nigeria’s political environment is entering a critical phase. The resolution or escalation of internal party disputes could significantly shape the credibility, timing, and overall success of the electoral process.
For now, the NNPP’s warning adds to growing pressure on INEC to act swiftly, decisively, and transparently in managing party leadership recognitions an issue that may ultimately determine the stability of Nigeria’s next electoral cycle.
