The Ogun State Government has once again suspended the selection process for the new Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, following the receipt of a fresh petition challenging aspects of the ongoing exercise.

In a directive issued on Tuesday, January 21, 2026, and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, the government ordered all kingmakers, the Ijebu Ode Local Government Council, and other stakeholders involved in the process to immediately halt further activities and await further instructions from the appropriate authorities.

The suspension marks the second time the process has been paused since the vacancy arose following the passing of the late Awujale, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, in July 2025.

The latest directive followed a fresh petition submitted to the state government, which reportedly raised concerns over procedural irregularities, eligibility of some candidates, and alleged breaches of the Ijebu traditional selection guidelines as contained in the Chiefs Law and the registered declaration for the Awujale stool.

The government assured that the petition would be thoroughly investigated to ensure transparency, fairness, and adherence to law and custom in the emergence of the new monarch.

“All parties are advised to remain calm and law-abiding while the issues are being addressed,” the statement added.

The development has sparked mixed reactions in Ijebuland, with some indigenes welcoming the intervention to prevent a flawed process, while others express concern over the prolonged vacancy and its implications for traditional leadership and cultural activities in the kingdom.

The Ijebu kingmakers and the ruling houses have yet to issue a formal response to the latest suspension.
