The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Thursday, March 19, 2026 and Friday, March 20, 2026 as public holidays to mark the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr, signifying the successful completion of the holy month of Ramadan.

The declaration was contained in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.

According to the statement, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who made the announcement on behalf of the Federal Government, extended warm greetings and heartfelt congratulations to the Muslim faithful for the successful completion of Ramadan.

The Minister urged Muslims to sustain the virtues of love, generosity, peace, tolerance and sacrifice emphasised during the holy month, and called on all Nigerians to use the festive period to pray for the continued peace, unity and prosperity of the nation.

Tunji-Ojo said: “While wishing the Muslim faithful a joyful Eid-el-Fitr celebration, I encourage citizens to celebrate responsibly and extend acts of kindness to the less privileged in society.”

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to fostering national unity and peaceful coexistence among all Nigerians, irrespective of faith or ethnicity.

The declaration aligns with the expected sighting of the Shawwal moon, with Eid-el-Fitr celebrations anticipated to begin on Thursday, March 19, 2026, subject to confirmation by the relevant authorities.
