The Department of State Services (DSS) has announced an internal investigation into the conduct of its operatives following the remand of human rights activist Omoyele Sowore at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja.
The Service said it was responding to widespread public concerns arising from events at the Federal High Court on Monday, which led to Sowore’s remand, including an alleged altercation involving a custodial officer and a reported scuffle with security operatives.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the DSS Deputy Director, Public Relations and Strategic Communications, Favour Dozie.
According to the DSS, although Sowore was eventually taken to Kuje Prison, he reportedly opted to be transported in a DSS vehicle instead of a Nigerian Correctional Service vehicle — a development the agency described as unusual and now under review.

The Director-General of the DSS has ordered an immediate and thorough investigation into the conduct of all operatives involved in the incident.
Background of the Case The DSS stated that Sowore’s current legal troubles stemmed from a social media post on August 25, 2025, in which he criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over comments made during a foreign trip. Rather than arresting him immediately, the Service issued a formal letter on September 4, 2025, demanding a retraction within one week.

Sowore was later charged under Section 24 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2024. He was granted bail on self-recognition, which the DSS said it did not oppose.
The agency maintained that the remand and related court proceedings were driven strictly by judicial processes and not by any direct action or opposition from the DSS.

The Service cited previous cases, including the court ruling on Prof. Pat Utomi’s “Shadow Government” and other defamation matters involving its operatives, to justify its approach of seeking judicial clarification or apologies in such situations.
The DSS reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and adherence to the rule of law, even amid public criticism.

The development has continued to generate debate about the balance between national security, freedom of expression, and the rights of activists in Nigeria.
