The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has directed all Commissioners of Police and tactical commanders across the country to immediately intensify enforcement operations against unregistered vehicles and those with concealed or missing number plates.
Disu gave the directive on Tuesday during a strategic conference meeting with senior police officers at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
“All commissioners of police and tactical commanders are directed to immediately intensify enforcement operations against unregistered vehicles and vehicles with concealed registration number,” the IGP stated.

The order is part of a broader strategy to enhance internal security, curb criminal activities, and improve vehicle identification on Nigerian roads. Security experts believe that vehicles without number plates are often used by criminals for escape after committing offences such as kidnapping, armed robbery, and banditry.
The IGP warned that any form of negligence or compromise by officers in enforcing this directive would be met with severe sanctions.

This latest directive comes amid growing concerns over the use of unregistered and unmarked vehicles in violent crimes across several states, particularly in the North-West, North-Central, and South-West regions.
Police authorities have assured the public that the operation will be conducted with professionalism and respect for the rights of law-abiding citizens, while urging vehicle owners to ensure their vehicles are properly registered and plates are clearly displayed.
