Former Kano State Governor and NNPP presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso has declared he is prepared to serve as Peter Obi’s vice-presidential running mate in the 2027 general elections, saying his decision is based on competence rather than regional power rotation.
Speaking in an interview with The Guardian, Kwankwaso said he would accept the VP role if it meant advancing Nigeria’s development agenda under Obi’s leadership. The announcement signals a potential major realignment ahead of the 2027 polls.

“I’m ready to work with Peter Obi if our goal is to rescue Nigeria and move it forward,” Kwankwaso stated. “For me, it’s about who can deliver, not where they come from. The country needs competence and integrity at this critical time.”
Kwankwaso, who finished fourth in the 2023 presidential election with over 1.4 million votes, has long been a key figure in northern politics. His willingness to deputize Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 flagbearer, could reshape opposition strategy and broaden the coalition’s national appeal.

The former minister of defence emphasized that the 2027 elections must focus on addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges, insecurity, and governance failures rather than being driven by ethnic or regional calculations.
Political analysts say a Kwankwaso-Obi ticket would combine northern political structure with southern reformist sentiment, creating one of the most formidable opposition alliances in recent history.

Neither Obi nor the Labour Party has officially responded to Kwankwaso’s declaration. The 2027 presidential race is expected to intensify in the coming months as parties begin early consultations and alliance talks.
