Dozens of villagers have been abducted by armed bandits in northwestern Nigeria after attending a meeting reportedly organized to discuss possible peace negotiations with criminal groups operating in the area.

The incident occurred on Sunday near Magamin Diddi village in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State. According to police authorities, at least 39 residents were kidnapped during the gathering, although local officials and community members say the number of victims could be closer to 50.

Residents said the meeting was arranged in an attempt to ease tensions between local communities and armed groups that have repeatedly attacked villages across the region. However, gunmen allegedly stormed the gathering and seized dozens of attendees before taking them into nearby forest areas.

Security authorities confirmed that efforts are ongoing to rescue the victims and track down those responsible for the attack. Some released captives were reportedly sent back to inform families and community leaders about ransom demands issued by the abductors.
