The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has begun the formal induction of AK-47 rifles and advanced pistols into its operational arsenal as it ramps up efforts to confront increasingly armed and violent drug trafficking networks across Nigeria.
The Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), announced this development on Monday during the inauguration of a specialised Train-the-Trainer Course on Weapon Handling at the NDLEA Academy in Jos, Plateau State.

According to a statement by the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the training focuses on the handling of AK-47 Rifle Type 56-1 and HS-9/CF98A pistols. This marks the first time in the agency’s 36-year history that such tactical weapons are being formally integrated into its operations.
Represented by his Chief of Staff, Col. Murtala Aminu, Marwa explained that the decision was driven by the changing dynamics of drug trafficking, where criminal organisations have become heavily armed, organised, and ruthless.
“The nature of the war we fight has evolved. Drug trafficking organisations are no longer mere commercial criminal enterprises; they are armed, organised, and ruthless. Our officers face increasing danger in the field, and it would be unconscionable for this Agency to send men and women into harm’s way without the tools and training to protect themselves and the public they serve,” he said.

Marwa disclosed that the procurement process, initiated in 2023 through the China North Industries Corporation, is at its final stage, with thousands of firearms and ammunition expected to arrive soon. The Nigerian Air Force will assist in distributing the weapons to NDLEA commands nationwide.
The pioneer batch of trainees, selected on merit from various commands, will undergo training and later conduct a mandatory one-month weapons handling course for all NDLEA personnel before the firearms are deployed operationally.

Marwa urged the trainees to uphold the highest standards of discipline, professionalism, and adherence to the rule of law.
“Weapons handling is not a privilege; it is a grave responsibility. Every firearm must be treated with the seriousness it demands at all times,” he warned.
He also thanked President Bola Tinubu for his support in strengthening the agency’s capacity and commended the Office of the National Security Adviser for providing the initial consignment of firearms and ammunition.

The NDLEA Chairman described the introduction of tactical weapons as another milestone in transforming the agency into a more professional and formidable force against drug traffickers.
This development is expected to significantly enhance the NDLEA’s operational effectiveness in the ongoing fight against illicit drug trade in the country.
