In a timely move to unite strongly, Nigerian governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), were recently hosted by Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, in Asaba, the State’s capital. The governors, after the meeting, issued a statement that it has agreed to hold the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on March 13, 2025.

The upcoming NEC meeting in March, will be a pivotal moment for the party, especially given its internal struggles and the need to solidify leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The attendees included;

Ambassador Umar Damagum, (Acting National Chairman),
Governor Oborevwori (chief host),
Gov. Bala Mohammed – Bauchi state (PDP Governors Forum – PDPGF Chairman),
Vice Chairman of PDPGF, Governor Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers),
Governors of Taraba, Adamawa, Zamfara, Osun, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Enugu, and Plateau states. Oyo State was represented by Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal.

The presence of key stakeholders and the PDP’s Edo 2024 candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, highlights the strategic importance of the meeting.

There are a few key touchpoints that can be taken from the Asaba close-door meeting, which includes the seeming leadership struggles at the party’s hierarchy. Unarguably, the fate of the Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, remains uncertain. Notwithstanding, his ability to retain the position will depend on how different factions within the party align.

Observers are optimistic that when the NEC meeting eventually holds in March, its outcomes could shape PDP’s approach to its internal challenges as an opposition party and broad outcomes of its legal posturing especially concerning the 2024 Edo governorship race.

The major concern for members as at now, is the cohesion of the party. With internal rifts and regional power struggles, PDP needs to unify its ranks to remain a strong opposition force.
