The Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday restored the bail of human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, fixing it at N200 million with two sureties.
Justice Mohammed Umar, who delivered the ruling, directed that one surety must be a traditional ruler from Sowore’s community, while the second must own landed property within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The court also ordered Sowore to surrender his international passport to the court registrar pending the conclusion of his trial.
Sowore is facing a five-count charge of alleged cybercrime and criminal defamation brought by the Department of State Services (DSS). The charges stem from social media posts in August 2025 in which he allegedly described President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal.”

He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Sowore was initially granted bail on self-recognisance in December 2025, with the judge warning him against making inflammatory statements. However, his bail was revoked on June 16, 2026, after he failed to appear in court for trial, leading to the issuance of a bench warrant.
The activist voluntarily returned to court on June 22 to challenge the warrant and also sought the judge’s recusal, which was dismissed.

In restoring the bail, Justice Umar took judicial notice of Sowore’s voluntary appearance in court rather than waiting to be arrested. He exercised discretion in Sowore’s favour while imposing stringent conditions to ensure compliance with court processes.
The case has been adjourned for further hearing.
Sowore’s legal team had argued for the restoration of bail citing constitutional provisions and concerns about his health while in detention at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

The development brings temporary relief to the activist, who has been a vocal critic of successive Nigerian administrations.
The trial continues.
