Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has warned Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates, especially those contesting for governorship positions, that political power is not handed over easily and must be fought for.
Wike made the remarks on Tuesday during the 109th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the PDP held at the party’s national secretariat, Wadata House, Abuja.
“I used the opportunity to urge candidates of the party, especially those running for governorship, to brace up for keen contests,” Wike said.
“For me, nobody gives power, and nobody will dash anyone power. Whoever that is seeking power must be ready to struggle for it.”

The former Rivers State Governor drew from his personal political journey, noting that he had to fight every step of the way, even for the position of local government chairman, which eventually went up to the Supreme Court.
“When I contested for ordinary local government chairmanship position, the matter went all the way to the Supreme Court,” he added.
Wike’s comments come amid growing speculation about his political future, especially after the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, publicly expressed a desire to “poach” him from the PDP, describing him as a hardworking and tireless minister.

However, the PDP has maintained that Wike remains one of its “finest political talents” and has no intention of allowing him to defect to the ruling party.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the national publicity secretary of Wike’s faction of the PDP, Jungudo Mohammed, described the minister’s role in the Tinubu administration as a temporary arrangement and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to retaining him.

The minister’s message is seen as a direct charge to PDP candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging them to prepare for intense political battles rather than expecting automatic victories.
